Taxiing Out
Remnants of the Storm, a social document of the present state of Western Society and it's associated image group " The Greatest Generation" is rolling away from the parking area toward takeoff. It will take many submissions by members to get this bird in the air. So please submit comments and content at Flickr.com/The Greatest Generation This URL should get you there http://www.flickr.com/groups/1495547@N21/
The intent is to provide a social document with a civilized look at the subject. In a sense it is an experiment fraught with pitfalls also.
Keeping 'pretty pictures and barbarity in the same place while asking the contributors to restrain yet express their thoughts is a balancing act for sure.
The idea is many-fold as to helping us all sober up from the long term effects of the period. We can appreciate the ordeal for what it was and for many, help us process what it means in terms of who we were and who we are today.
The discussions will be by members only. and membership is by invitation which is not hard to come by really. I do not expect to totally be capable of keeping trouble makers out. I just want to keep them from flaming.
Any contributions of images or thoughts will be appreciated.
This will be slow going, I have not the feel of it yet, the interface and all. But it will evolve. I am calling admins " content director" Moderators will be called " curator", members are dubbed "inheritor' to indicate their position relative to the present post war cultural era. We are the living embodiment of that event and it's aftermath.
Members are requested to submit their best material and especially asked to submit material exclusive to " The Greatest Generation " such submissions will be promoted as such and that promotion will of course be withdrawn if the material is found elsewhere.
This is not to say all TGG images and content will be exclusive. But such content will build the site and group prestige.
This group will attempt to use online translation to facilitate a wider audience. The Second World War was wide spread, after all it is called a " World War" and interest and sharing thoughts of we the inheritors is popular. A broad yet knowledgeable audience is expected.
Members are asked to promote TGG and it's blog. Suggestions for themes and subject matter are invited. This is your site and as such your enlightened participation is called for. Just remember we are working toward understanding and not opening wounds. But veterans groups with members who once tried to kill one another get together all over the world and drink to their mutual ordeal. Should not the inheritors be able to find peaceful respite as well? This benefits inheritors and group growth. Without this TGG will stay at the level of other groups which have little participation and little meaning.
Have you submitted your material to a lot of groups with many members only to see photos with no commentary or description and with a high number of submissions because they take everything, which results in your submission getting few hits. Reading the blog, and getting your content featured there will promote the interests of the group but relevance is the key. Tell us the meaning to yourself and other inheritors How has this object or event made the world you or your society the way it is today?
Content types are; World War II era related content photos, video, ideas, culture, historical objects, military and civilian history of the period from the 1930s through the '50s that lead to or came out of the war. Technology, events, philosophy, behavior, people, places and things. In other words the world of those who fought the war in combat or at home and those of us called " Baby Boomers" born from the natural biological drive of the human race as a result of the devastation. Commentary of the psychology, sociology or other scientific or cultural impact is especially welcome. Participation by scholars and serious students will be of tremendous value.
But please, prospective inheritors note; We require these items to have a description of who, what, when, where and why. I know the present photos have been uploaded by me to get started and do not have this. But that will be corrected.
All the best,
Adrian
